Yes! You heard me, it’s possible to share a Medium post privately, and it’s just a matter of adding few clicks before you can share the link with someone. But, you may ask…

Why one should prefer to use Medium as a template to compile a UX portfolio/case study.

  1. It’s responsive — just focus on your content
  2. Don’t forget it’s for readers & writers — no more hunting special fonts to test how legible it is
  3. Get more organic traffic for your projects (if it’s in public) — if you want more people to view your project compilation, and add responses to it
  4. You don’t have much time, and all you have is your research data, process, thoughts, stories to even visuals assets including video clips, GIFs, Image sequences that you can compile quickly
  5. It’s optimized for viewing experience — way better than sending a PDF file

Seems interesting to you? Let’s get started…

The following GIF can give you a live example of how one share a Medium post privately with someone. Let’s assume you’re done with your UX compilation/a case study/a even a UX Research presentation that you would like to share. Now follow this user flow as mentioned below…

Click Publish button → Click Visibility: Unlisted → Select Unlisted → Click Save → and then hit the Publish button. Also, leave the tag section blank since it’s not going to be in public.

Once it’s published, you’ll see a unlisted Medium story as shown down here.

But, how can you share this unlisted story with someone? There is no Share button on Medium once it’s published. It’s a manual process, and all you have to do is select the entire URL without the /edit section; see an example bellow. That’s the private link for your publication or unlisted story according to Medium.

What if you send the entire URL (along with /edit) to someone? The person/receiver has to log in to Medium in order to view this unlisted story. That’s the only difference you need to remember before sharing the link with someone.

So make sure you test your own URL by opening it on Chrome’s Incognito or Firefox’s/Safari’s private windows before you share with someone.

Also note that an Unlisted stories will not appear in the home feed, profile page, tag page, or in search results on Medium, because they’re not in public than private.

Now I need to check it’s out put.. and for that I’ll get back to this post with some insights soon.

Thanks for reading!
